With all of the competition that job seekers face in their daily job search it has become increasingly difficult for those who are unemployed to find work. It has been stated that in today’s job market, about 70% of all job openings are being filled by networking. Because of this fact then it has become very important for job seekers to try and build a job search networking system. Companies who are looking for employees will hire people who have high recommendations a lot quicker than those who don’t. Building a job search network may seem like a daunting task but if you are determined it will not be all that hard of a thing to do.

To begin building your network you will need to list all the types of people you would like to have in your network. You need to first think about your family members, immediate members as well as your extended family. You should also include your friends, certain acquaintances, your neighbors, people you once worked with and even members of your church.

Others you can add to your network could be those you might meet at a gym, sporting events, the parents of your kids friends. If you do volunteer work, include those people you associate with when you are volunteering. Even include those who have done work for you at home like your plumber. Be creative.

Make sure that the network you set up can be easily integrated into your daily life. A network needs to be continual and not just something that happens once. When setting it up and working with it you should feel comfortable doing it, it needs to fit your lifestyle. Make sure that you also know how to make an introduction with regards to who you are to those people you don’t know very well or don’t know at all. Letting people know who you are can come in quite handy down the road.

It’s important that you rotate your list. You need to set a goal to keep in touch with those in your network so that they know what you are up to and how things are going. It’s a good idea to ask them to do the exact same thing. Make it friendly and personal for all who are in the network. Make sure that the method of contact you use is the preferred way of the person in your network. If one person prefers emails then email them, if someone else prefers a text message then do that. Make sure that you list everyone’s preferences so as to keep things running smoothly with all the people you have listed.

Once you have been referred to someone with regards to a job possibility from someone in your network make sure to contact them immediately and make sure that whomever you were told to contact is the person that you get a hold of. Even if you don’t get a job offer, make sure that you thank the person that referred you. This will keep the window of communication open with them in case they find more referrals for you. If you send them a thank you note, make it personal, don’t print it off your computer, send them a handwritten one instead.

If you do find job through the help of those on your network, it is always a good thing to return the favor. If you know someone on your list is looking for work and you run across a company that is need of someone with their skills, then send them the referral. Make sure you are as helpful to others in your network as they were for you.
