If you have a gift for writing and have considered writing stories for children, this could be the perfect work at home job for you. This can be a great way to start and new and exciting career while finding your inner child at the same time. It's an excellent way to have a positive impact on a child's life, even ones you will never see. It will take some research, time and patience but if you have the talent and true desire you should be able to do it.
One of the first things you should probably do is go to your local library and check out a variety of different books as well as magazines that are for children. Make sure you get a variety of age groups and a variety of genres like fantasy, family books, mysteries, etc. You should read them all so that you can get some sort of idea of what kinds of stories you might like to write for kids.
Once you've decided on the genre you want to write you should probably enroll in some creative writing classes. A lot of the teachers that teach these kinds of classes are not just teachers but have also had their own stories published and these can be great contacts to have when you start to get more serious about getting published.
You should also start writing every day. No matter what it is write it, finish it and then put it away for a little bit while you start writing another story. Continue doing this for about six weeks and then go back to your first story and read it. Then move onto the next story you read and so on. This way they are fresh to you and you might be able to find things you might want to change along the way.
You should continue to rewrite all of your stories until you have gotten them to the point where you don't think that you can improve upon them anymore. You should then take them into your creative writing instructor to get their opinion and feedback.
You could also join a writing group that deals only with children's stories and you can then begin sharing your stories with others that do the same thing. You will also be able to read others stories which should help you get more insight into your own writing.
Look for conferences that are centered around writers who write children's stories. You can also look into finding writing workshops to join where you can meet other writers, agents and editors. This is where you can start trying to get others to see your stories and perhaps someone to represent you or publish your work.
It's a very good idea if you go and buy the newest edition of what is called the Children's Writer's Market. In this book you will find a list of agents, publishers and magazines that publish children's stories. Make sure that you follow all of the instructions on how to submit your work and then send them into the different agents and or publisher.
